When Is Epiretinal Membrane Surgery Performed On Patients?

A thin layer of scar tissues called epiretinal membrane is formed on the retina, which distorts the central vision of an individual. The layer is formed on the central part of the retina, called macula that is responsible for seeing fine details. An epiretinal membrane surgery becomes unavoidable to improve the condition of the patient.

During this surgery, a procedure called vitrectomy eye surgery is performed on the affected eye. In this surgery, the eye specialist removes the vitreous humour ( a gel-like substance) present in front of the macula. Once the final procedure is completed, the gel is replaced with saline solution.

Once the vitrectomy procedure is done, the ophthalmologist physically peels off the membrane from the retina, with the help of fine forceps. A small air bubble is left inside the eye at the end, to help wounds heal easily. The patient can see a small shadow like structure in the line of sight. This bubble generally disappears within a week.

Generally, the holes or removing the gel and the membrane are made is such a way that they could heal by themselves and no stitches are required. The doctor generally performs the surgery while local anesthesia is given. It is mainly because they believe that it helps in keeping patients active and reduces complications. It is very important to stay still while the surgery is being performed since the surgery requires a lot of precision.

The only way to treat the epiretinal membrane condition is having the surgery done. Eye drops and glasses are not effective. The surgery generally helps in making the distortion better.

Few patients decide not to go for the surgery and they accept to continue living with distorted vision. It is completely the decision of the patient to go for surgery or not. The eye specialist can suggest the best treatment for the condition.
