When Is Epiretinal Membrane Surgery Performed On Patients?

A thin layer of scar tissues called epiretinal membrane is formed on the retina, which distorts the central vision of an individual. The layer is formed on the central part of the retina, called macula that is responsible for seeing fine details. An epiretinal membrane surgery becomes unavoidable to improve the condition of the patient.

During this surgery, a procedure called vitrectomy eye surgery is performed on the affected eye. In this surgery, the eye specialist removes the vitreous humour ( a gel-like substance) present in front of the macula. Once the final procedure is completed, the gel is replaced with saline solution.

Once the vitrectomy procedure is done, the ophthalmologist physically peels off the membrane from the retina, with the help of fine forceps. A small air bubble is left inside the eye at the end, to help wounds heal easily. The patient can see a small shadow like structure in the line of sight. This bubble generally disappears within a week.

Generally, the holes or removing the gel and the membrane are made is such a way that they could heal by themselves and no stitches are required. The doctor generally performs the surgery while local anesthesia is given. It is mainly because they believe that it helps in keeping patients active and reduces complications. It is very important to stay still while the surgery is being performed since the surgery requires a lot of precision.

The only way to treat the epiretinal membrane condition is having the surgery done. Eye drops and glasses are not effective. The surgery generally helps in making the distortion better.

Few patients decide not to go for the surgery and they accept to continue living with distorted vision. It is completely the decision of the patient to go for surgery or not. The eye specialist can suggest the best treatment for the condition.

Know The Secret Behind Epiretinal Membrane Surgery To Help Patients With Vision Distortion

Macula, the centre part of the retina that aids in reading, driving, recognising complex shapes etc. At times, scar tissue grows across the macula, as the membrane shrinks, it causes a problem in retinal tissue that requires epiretinal membrane surgery.  The procedure is suggested because the macula cannot work normally if it is not performed. Patients would face a problem with a few daily tasks, but the problem would not lead to blindness.

The only way to treat an epiretinal membrane problem is vitrectomy eye surgery. Glasses or eye drops are not effective. During the procedure, the ophthalmologist makes a tiny cut in the eye and removes all vitreous liquid. The specialist uses a forceps, to peel of the membrane gently, from the retina. Generally, small stitches are used to close the cuts, which dissolve naturally in a period of four to six weeks. A pad and shield are put on the eye, after the procedure to protect it.

Specialists in the field decide if the patient needs the surgery or not. The main reason for the surgery is to correct the distortion in the central vision. If the patients are not facing any visual problems, then the corrective procedure is not suggested.

If patients face the regular problem of distortion while performing daily activities like reading, driving, or other important activities, then the surgeon would go for the simple procedure. If patients do not prefer the surgery, they would face a problem with their daily activities. The surgery is not a preventive measure but helps people as their vision is distorted because of the problem in the membrane.

This problem is more common in people above 50 years. In a few cases, this problem arises with patients had eye surgery or inflammation in the eye.

Patients need to contact good eye specialist for any problem related to eye because that particular organ plays an important role in everyone’s life.

2 Major Steps Of Retinal Membrane Surgery

An epiretinal membrane is a condition in which a very thin layer of scar tissue is formed over retina. Macula, the part of the eye affected by this membrane, is responsible for a person’s sharpest vision. A person with this problem would experience blurring and distortion of vision. If these two symptoms are severe and are disrupting day to day activities, then ophthalmologist would suggest a retinal membrane surgery.  Since there is no medication (like drops) for this problem, removal of membrane surgically is the only way out.

Epiretinal removal involves vitrectomy eye surgery followed by membrane peeling. Three holes are made in the effected eye; the jelly like substance that fills the center of eye called vitreous humor is removed with the help of instruments (vitrectomy). The vitreous fluid is replaced by natural fluid produced by eye, thus not causing any permanent damage to the eye. The membrane is peeled off retina with the help of fine forceps (membrane peeling). A small air bubble is left inside the eye at the end of surgery, which helps in healing process. This bubble is expected to disappear within a week. The three holes, made at the beginning of the surgery, heal and close by themselves. No stitches are required for this procedure which generally takes less than an hour to perform. This procedure is done under local anesthesia, but you are required to remain still during the whole process. After a surgery, a shield is placed on your eye and can be removed after a day.
