The macula is located at the center of the sensitive tissue known as the retina. The main function of Macula is providing the sharp and central which is needed for driving, reading, and seeing the minute details. What causes the problem when a macular hole is detected which is only treated by macular hole surgery. The size and location of the hole on the retina determine the vision of a person suffering macular hole.
A macular hole is treated by a retina specialist in Melbourne and the most common one is vitrectomy. In this operation, the retina specialist removes the vitreous gel by avoiding from pulling on the retina. Further, there is an insertion of air and gas mixture into space which was earlier occupied by vitreous. The macular hole is healed by the pressure of air and gas bubble on the edges.
The side effect of macular hole surgery includes the retinal detachment and infection.
There are four types of macular hole surgeries:
- Vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane: It is mainly focused on removing the vitreous gel and trims out the inner limiting membrane. It is also known as macular pucker surgery.
- Vitrectomy for the macular hole: It focuses on vitrectomy and peeling of the inner limiting membrane. After the surgery, there is a posturing period for the proper functioning of the eye.
- Vitrectomy for vitreomacular traction syndrome: This procedure mainly includes the vitrectomy along with the peeling of the ILM.
- Vitrectomy for macular oedema: It is mainly used when epiretinal membrane causes thickening of the macula. It is as same as the surgery needed for epiretinal membrane.
The most common risk of the macular issue is the development of cataract. If one has macula in one eye, there is a higher chance that the other can be the victim macular hole. So, a regular eye examination is recommended.
