What Everyone Ought To Know About Vitrectomy Surgery

Vitrectomy surgery is a type of eye operation in which the ophthalmologist removes vitreous, jelly like fluid inside patient’s eye and replaces it with a saline solution. Specialists perform this surgery as pre-procedure to treat few eye complications.

For a person to see, light has to reach retina through eye. Tissues present at the back of eye, sense light and send information to brain. Few diseases cause fluid to cloud or fill with blood or debris. If the liquid does not have the original texture, it would stop light from reaching retina that would cause vision problem.

Sometimes retina pulls itself away from the tissue around it and jelly in front of the retina is removed to repair retinal tissues. Such procedure is called macular hole surgery. In this procedure, the specialist works on macula, the central part of retina, that is responsible for sharp central vision. A hole in it would result in blurry vision.

Few eye problems that eye-specialist treat with vitrectomy procedure are:

  • Damaged blood vessels in retina
  • Eye infections
  • Serious eye injuries
  • Macular pucker
  • Retinal detachment

During the surgery, the specialist makes a cut in the outer layer in the eye that goes through the white part of the eye. The vitreous fluid is removed with a needle. Along with the jelly liquid, the doctor removes all debris like the scar tissues. Once the fluid is removed, the specialists perform all necessary repairs. A bubble is then inserted to keep the retina in place. The bubble goes away gradually. Patients need to maintain a head down position for few days for the bubble to be in its position.

In few cases instead of saline solution, silicone oil is used instead. If this oil is used, the patient will need a surgery, in a later stage, to get it removed. Some patients may need stitches to close the cut but most of them do not need it. An antibiotic ointment can solve the purpose.

The Real Story About Mocualr Surgery In Melbourne

Retina is the front part of an eye which is responsible for eye-sight. This central part of eye is covered with a special type of nerve cells that are very close together in the middle of the retina, called macula. At times, these nerve cells separate from each other and pull away from eye surface, causing a macular-hole.

If the hole is too small and does not cause major vision problems, the doctors do not suggest mocualr surgery in Melbourne. They would suggest patients to go for frequent eye check-ups to ensure that hole does not increase in size and don’t cause any other vision problems.

In cases when a patient faces severe problems and the hole is significant, a specialist would suggest a surgery. Before treating the hole, the ophthalmologist performs vitrectomy procedure on the effected eye. During this procedure, the surgeon makes a cut in the outer layer of the eye. A needle is inserted through the cut to remove the vitreous fluid. The cut is also used for removing scar tissues. Once the liquid is removed, the surgeon proceeds with macular-hole treatment.

The specialists now remove membranes or tissue pieces that are left using fine forceps. Such debris is removed to prevent anything from closing the macula hole. Once they are sure that there are no membranes left, the hole is filled with a sterile gas in place vitreous fluid. The gas is inserted to keep enough pressure on macula until it heals. Patients are advised to maintain face-down position for a week at least, to keep the gas in place and faster macula healing.

In most cases, the surgery is successful, but patients may face problem with their vision if they do not maintain face-down position. Normally after a successful surgery, the patients may not face any significant problem with sight, but in few cases the amount of regained vision varies.

If patients observe few symptoms like appearance of dark spots, difficulty in seeing fine details, it is better to approach a specialist, who could conduct few tests and suggest the best possible treatment.
